He told me to get an mri

Get the MRI. You should know that the only sure way to find out what the problem is, is to desire medical advice from a professional.
As much as we would like to sustain, we really can't.
It is probably a non-hazardous osteochondroma. An MRI can tell this, but also rule out a life and appendage threatening osteosarcoma - this cancer can be deadly. Even though you are probably fine you need to follow through next to the MRI as soon as possible. Get it rescheduled!
